Collaboration technologies can be understood from the name itself. Collaboration can be interpreted as the coming together of different individuals or different entities, with the basic aim of completing a certain objective. Collaboration technology therefore, is the utilization of more than one ICT-based tool, with the end goal of achieving efficiency in coordination, communication and problem solving. Collaboration technologies came as a result of the increased need by companies to increase the efficiency and productivity of their workforce, which in turn impacts on the productivity and profitability as well. Collaboration technologies eliminate the bottlenecks that plagued traditional information sharing methods, such as location and file sharing.
There is also the other need for this workforce to be smarter as well, which calls for increased need for technological application. All these needs will not easily be satisfied by one technological application, but rather, a combination of various dedicated applications. Collaboration technologies, however, are not only restricted to helping the workforce perform, these technologies also help in increasing the creativity of the workforce. This is by giving the employees various problem-solving dimensions.
The early examples of collaboration technologies involved the use of video and audio conferencing. These incorporated the use of parameters such as calendars and wiki. Metcalfe's law particularly favored these collaborative technologies, as it stated that the more the usage of a certain element, the more important the element becomes. Another example comes in the provision of platforms that look like social sites, where the employees and the management can exchange information. These sites are customized with crowd sourcing tools to help the employees, such as Spigit. This has had practical benefits, to some companies, such as CEMEX. Employees managed to fully utilize the online interactive platform that they had, so as to exchange ideas on alternative sources of information. In the long run, they managed to come up with strategies that helped in significantly cutting down on the carbon emissions of the company, thereby cutting costs. In the end, the company managed to save as much as $140 million, money that would have otherwise been used in dealing with the emissions; while at the same time making a further $80 million on credits (Accenture, 2016).These sites also use wiki. Wikis are usually very helpful in the knowledge management (KM) as well as the smooth utilization of the collaborative technologies (Rummler & Bor, 2010).
