Carbon footprints refer to the measure that is applied in establishing how much a given entity has contributed towards the production of the green house gases. It traces all the activities that have any form of emissions, whether the production system, procurement, transport office operations among others. All of these activities that emit the green house gases contribute towards the global warming effects that have been experienced in the last decades and have been on the rise exponentially. One of the strategies that have been greatly advocated is the use of energy efficiency technologies and practices that reduce the effects (Vanderheiden, 2011). The carbon footprint is usually a figure that is calculated from the various activities on an annual or monthly basis. According to data that was collected by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the top most of the activities that produce the highest amounts of the green house gases are electricity production at 33%, transport at 28%, industry at 20%, commercial and residential stand at 11% while agriculture stands at 8%.
One of the ethical issues that come out about the United Parcel Services of American company, is it commitment reducing the carbon footprints, as part of the strategy to reduce the global warming effects in the world. The United Parcel Services of American (UPS) accounts that most of the green houses gases that it produces are from the transport systems and mechanisms that it uses to deliver the good. The company which has a global clientele transports its parcels through trucks, bicycles, ships, trains and planes. More than 90% of this fleet runs on the carbon fuels, which given the implications of one unit multiplied with the numbers under its control and the geographical reach of the company, the effect of the carbon footprints is quite staggering.
