Developing Your Team
Aligning a team towards the achievement of the company’s mission should start by supporting employees in the progression of their personal goals. This step aids in encouraging them to ensure their efforts are geared towards the organizational vision. There are fundamental ways of ensuring that employees work in alignment with the company’s mission. The management should make goals that are relevant to the team. The work should not only be based on the completion of tasks but also the achievement of purpose in the completed work. Thus, managers should get the opinions of different employees relating to their goals to ensure they work for a purpose. Also, management should hold company meetings and talk about the plans and efforts made by the organizations towards the achievement of the mission and vision to aid in the creation of awareness among the team members.
Leadership and motivation are based on five principle theories. First, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory reveals that people are driven by different needs with different priorities ranging from the most significant to the less essential in matters of preference (Pustelnik, 2016). According to Pustelnik (2016), the needs include; self-actualization, esteem, belonging, safety, and physiological. Second, Hertzberg’s two-factor model classifies human needs in two broad categories, including hygiene and motivating factors (Pustelnik, 2016). Pustelnik (2016) argues that hygiene factors ensure that employees are not dissatisfied, while motivating factors ensure their satisfaction and motivation for improved performance. Third, Pustelnik (2016) claims that McClelland’s theory of needs emphasizes that all people have three motivating drivers, including; achievement, affiliation, and power that do not depend on factors such as gender or age.
Fourth, Vroom’s theory of expectancy states that people will be highly motivated and productive under two conditions; if they believe their efforts are likely to lead to success or if they think they will be rewarded for their success (Pustelnik, 2016). Finally, McGregor’s theory Y and theory X formulates two distinct views relating to the participation of workers. Theory X emphasizes that workers are lazy, self-centered and lack ambition, and the management system should be strong to control the team appropriately (Pustelnik, 2016). Theory Y reveals that workers are motivated and eager to accept challenges, and the management should reinforce a system inducing positive rewards to create a productive workforce. Management systems should enhance a balance of the theories in the appropriate implementation to ensure proper management of workers for efficient delivery of outcomes.
Human resource management (HRM) increases employee performance to their highest individual levels concerning their role in the organization. Fay et al. (2015) argue that HRM plays five significant functions in an organi...
