Understanding the differences between the different categories of events is essential for any event manager. It allows him to create a more appropriate and highly sought-after event that would fit its primary purpose and generate the most response from both the event-goers and other audiences that could potentially be the new event-goers in the future. Accordingly, this article would focus on comparing local and international events in the cultural, sports, and business categories. The author would initially focus on a determination and description of why such events fit under each category provided, followed by a brief comparison between the two events. All in all, the author believes that by understanding the comparative differences between a local and international event in each category, an event manager becomes more capable of designing and planning one for any type of occasion.
Events Comparison
This section would describe each type of event and provide a brief comparison between the local and international events that were conducted in the UAE and in other parts of the world.
Cultural Events
General Information
Cultural events are those which aim to join together a large group of individuals in the celebration, affirmation, or appreciation of a cultural idea, belief, or tradition, among others. For this section, the author would compare the Middle East and Comic Con (MEFCC) and the San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC) held in Dubai, UAE, and in Sand Diego, United States, respectively. Accordingly, the reason why the author believes that these events fall under "cultural events" is because both of them aim to celebrate a facet of the pop culture that is present in both countries. Notably, these fall under "Art-form festivals," which focus on "a specific art form, offering unique opportunities for audiences to see particular kinds of work" CITATION Bow06 \l 1033 (Bowdin, O'Toole, Allen, Harris, & McDonnell, 2006). This is apparent given that both events focus on 'comics' and other forms or related art forms in both events provided above.
Before going to the main differences between the two events, it would be best to provide a short description of their features and activities. Both the MEFCC and SDCC feature a wide variety of events that includes cosplays, conventions, comic-themed booths, art forms, and other types of popular culture events to which fans may participate therein. Although the MEFCC explicitly consists of the word 'films' in its name, both of these events include popular comic films and cater to international pop culture mainly influenced by Japanese anime or Western movies. Thus, anyone is allowed and encouraged to participate extensively by joining in games, raffles, and cosplays, among others.
Comparison
One of the main differences between the MEFCC and the SDCC is the month they usually hold. On the one hand, the MEFCC is traditionally held around the last week of March, following the various art festivals in Dubai such as World Art Dubai, Dubai Woodshow, and FinnoSec Middle East, among others CITATION MEF21 \l 1033 (MEFCC.com, 2021). On the other hand, the SDCC is done in the last weeks of July following the summer events that are held in various locations all over the State CITATION Com21 \l 1033 (Comic-con.Org, 2021). It is regarded as the largest convention of each kind, dwarfing those that are held in various other parts of the globe CITATION Sla21 \l 1033 (Slakowitz, 2021).
Although both events are highly similar regarding their theme and circumstances, this difference in event dates is in line with their respective State's yearly events for their Art appreciation festivals, which suggests the importance of using these to improve audience attendance for these kinds of events.
Another main difference between the two events is the difference in scheduling between them. On the one hand, the MEFCC is usually held within one week of extensive events wherein individuals from both UAE and foreign countries may go for the whole week CITATION MEF21 \l 1033 (MEFCC.com, 2021). On the other hand, the SDCC has a more dispersed schedule of activities, some of which may start as early as July CITATION Com21 \l 1033 (Comic-con.Org, 2021).
One of the potential reasons for this is the cost of stay and the intended audience for each of the events. Since the United States is a larger country and where participants may use their cars to travel, the costs of stay are lower and the number of participants is significantly higher. This is one of the potential reasons why the events may be held in longer durations and a more dispersed schedule for the SDCC.
contrast, the MEFCC also caters to foreign participants, but the higher costs of stay require it to compress its events within one week compared to that of the SDCC.
Sports Events
Another classification of events is sports events. Generally, sports events are defined as those that cater and showcase the various sports categories and where men or women are given a chance to display skills, power, and intellect, among others. Accordingly, one of the most attended sports events is the Grand Prix. To illustrate, the author would use two of the most widely known Grand Prix events: the Monaco Grand Prix and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which are held in Monaco and the UAE, respectively.
General Information
Both of these events fall under "calendar events" due to their success and popularity. They are not bidding for, and attendees are already aware that they are regularly held at a specific date each year due to their success and wide acceptance by the general public CITATION Bow06 \l 1033 (Bowdin, O'Toole, Allen, Harris, & McDonnell, 2006). On the one hand, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is regularly held in the Yas Marina Circuit since the year 2009. It caters to Formula 1 Championships and is attended by hundreds of thousands of event goers CITATION Eti21 \l 1033 (Etihad.com, 2021). It is also considered to be the final race in the 2020 Formula 1 Calendar. On the other hand, the Monaco Grand Prix is one of the most popular racing events in the world. It is usually held in the Circuit de Monaco during the last weeks of May or the early weeks of June. It has been traditionally held for as earl...
