Instances of extreme temperatures have raised alarm on the dangers of global warming. It has drawn attention from various stakeholders including governments, scientists, NGOs, media houses among others. An article appearing on The New York Times on July 28, 2019, explores the issue of extraordinary hot summers, something that was unheard of in the 1950s. The authors use two graphs (1951-1980 and 2005-2015) to demonstrate how global temperatures have increased since the 1950s. Noticeable characteristics of the two graphs Looking at the two graphs gives a different picture of global temperatures between the two time periods; 1951-1980 (base period) and 2005-2015. During the base period, temperatures were evenly distributed with cold and hot periods. However, in the 2005-2015 period, cold temperatures have reduced and shifted to hot and extremely hot temperatures. Additionally, the large increase in summer temperatures is noticeable in the 2005-2015 period. The temperatures are reaching extremely hot during summer which was not frequent in the base period. During the 1951-1980 temperatures rarely reached extremely hot. This is an indication that summers are increasingly reaching temperatures that were imaginable in the mid-20th Century. Furthermore, the 2005-2015 graph has flattened out compared to the 1951-1980 graph. In the base period, a majority of the summer temperatures fell near the average, with the most extreme temperatures (cold or hot) on the sides. As a result, the graph looks like a bell.
