How do we think about the role of business in society?
Business plays a significant role which makes them become integrated into society. First, businesses create employment opportunities to help people acquire their livelihood. When the members of society earn a living, they can sustain their family needs, and money will circulate in society, making it grow. Businesses are also mandated to produce goods and services that satisfy society's demand. Society needs to eat and live a better life; hence there must be an avenue through which goods and services get to them. Businesses are there to offer different services and supply goods based on society's needs. The goods and services must be of good standards and fairly priced not to oppress the people. Also, businesses are involved in corporate social responsibilities, indulging in initiatives that benefit the people.
A society requires better infrastructure, hospitals, clean water, and many other initiatives that help eradicate poverty. Businesses come together and ensure their profits return to the community and help improve their livelihoods. When a business operates in a society and goes to develop other places, it should be shut down immediately since it is exploiting the members and their resources. At the same time, it has nothing under its name that benefits society. Most businesses have prospered and are accepted fully by society members due to the benefits they pass to them. When society is happy due to the development of the business, they will also buy their goods and services and participate in all development projects that market the business even to outsiders. All these make business an important part of society as it helps grow the members, steer development, and ensure that the lives of all the members have improved significantly. A society should embrace many businesses if it has a vision of growing and enjoying modern infrastructure and other amenities. Besides the government, only businesses will do more to ensure that society has access to essential amenities. It is a good gesture to society since the business becomes part and parcel of it, ensuring people enjoy better lifestyles.
What are your thoughts on sustainability and the future of business/society?
Many businesses strive to achieve sustainability, which will help them enjoy benefits. When a business achieves sustainability, it benefits from a better brand image and improved competitive advantage. A business will strive to build a name if it does not relate well with members of society. Society is the consumer of goods and services and therefore helps a business build its name and image. If a business does not benefit its members, the members may boycott the business's goods and services, look for an alternative, or go to the competitor. That would drive that business out of the market. However, once a business achieves sustainability, it has considered the members of the society through CSR and offering up to standard goods, which helps it build a better brand image and have an improved competitive advantage.
Sustainability also helps businesses acquire and retain better employees. Once a business is well positioned in society, has a better image, and dominates in the market, it can hire the best. Good employees help take a business to greater heights since they have the ideas and offer better services to customers who eventually return. Society will associate a business with professional employees who serve them well and extend after-sale services. Good employees help a business survive in the future as they keep making it better and improving the profits. Sustainability ensures a business achieves waste reduction. Most businesses, especially those involved in manufacturing and packaging goods, emit waste that, if not managed, may harm society through pollution.
