I have heard this statement multiple times that the best way to learn is by doing it. In business studies, we usually study a lot of theories, however, we do not get a chance to apply them in a real-world scenario. I understand that still there are many years before we will be making management decisions in an organization, as on completion of our studies, we will be joining an organization at entry level where our focus will be more on the execution of strategies and not formulating the strategies.
However, at this stage of our career, the closest we can come to taking management decisions is via a simulation game. We too had a similar opportunity as we participated in a Business Simulation Game. There were a total of ten teams in the game. These ten teams represented ten fictional companies operating in the footwear industry. The company which I was a part of was IOne Man Alone Company.
I would like to summarize the performance of the company as follows: The Company had poor performance over the simulation period. In 11th Year, we were in 5th position. In 12th year, we dropped to 10th position. In 13th year, we were still at the 10th position, however, the weighted scores reduced further. In 14th year, we were still at the 10th position, however, the weighted scores reduced further. In 15th year, our performance improved marginally and we moved to 9th position (however I feel that improvement in ranking is more due to the poor performance of another team). In 16th year, we were still at the 9th position, despite the weighted score reducing further. In 17th year, we were still at the 9th position, despite the weighted score reducing further. In 18th year, we were still at the 9th position, despite the weighted score improved marginally. In 19th year, we were still at the 9th position, despite the weighted score reducing further.
Based on the overall results, I can infer that although our performance can be considered to be average in the 11th year we were virtually out of the competition in 12th year itself and afterwards it was more about survival. So, my key learning revolves around three aspects: Why we were at the 5th position in the 11th year? What mistake did we commit in the 12th year? Why could not we recover after that?
