In the article “Mutation allows coronavirus to infect more cells, study finds. scientists urge caution” Carey & Glanz (2020) report on recent reports that there is likely genetic variation in the way the virus spreads partly because of mutation. In lab settings, mutated coronaviruses have been shown to spread faster and aggressively in cells, indicating that it is likely that there are strains that are spread at a more rapid rate. The D614G mutation is reported to cause the virus to stabilize the spike proteins that allows the coronavirus to attach to cells that are affected by the virus (Carey & Glanz). However, this phenomenon is in the lab settings and has not been tested in animals, which would conform that the mutation makes coronavirus more infectious.
