Neurons
The understanding of human biology, the roots and possible remedies of diseases, and complex life science puzzles all hinge upon the scrutiny of human cells. Out of the innumerable cells, I find the neuron, or nerve cell, particularly interesting because of its complex form and function within the nervous system. Communication between different portions of the body for the process of perception, thought, and response is carried out with the help of the neurons, which are the fundamental units of the nervous system, along with the associated supporting cells and non-cellular elements.
Neurons exhibit many different specializations, including the soma or cell body, the dendrites, and the long process known as the axon. Each neuron’s cell body, more appropriately soma, is the main control center of the cell and contains the nucleus. The body of the neuron. Dendrites are branch-like structures that 'listen' to signals sent from different neurons and send electrical signals 'home' to the cell body (Holdaway, 2024). The axon is a long, slender projection that fires off signals, sending them 'away' from the body of the neuron, and 'to' different neurons, muscles, or glands as shown in figure 1. Neurons are unique in their ability to create and pass on action potentials, and the membrane features numerous voltage-dependen...
