Hazardous Physical/Chemical Properties
The chemical is liquid with no color but can be dyed with blue, orange, or red colors, it smells pleasantly sweet. It boils at 392 degrees Fahrenheit, freezes at -202 degrees Fahrenheit, and with a 200 degrees’ Fahrenheit flash point. Also, the chemical has a specific gravity of 1.65 and a molecular weight of 323.45. The chemical has a heavier vapor than air and has a chemical risk of decomposing once heated. The chemical reacts aggressively to strong oxidants, halogens, and acids generating the risk of fire and explosions (Sarkar, 2020). Further, Tetraethyl lead has environmental hazards as it affects aquatic organisms because it destabilizes the aquatic environment.
Routes of Entry
The chemical has three routes of entry to human health that is, ingestion, dermal exposure, and inhalation. The chemical is an organic lead that is distributed to the brain and metabolized to Tetraethyl lead upon exposure through any route (Sarkar, 2020). Tetraethyl lead can last months in the body as it is slowly metabolized to an inorganic lead that will deposit in the bones.
Effects on the Body
The chemical has differing effects depending on the route of exposure. For dermal exposure, the chemical is absorbed through the skin causing itchiness, burning feeling, and redness, it may also cause the skin to look pale. In case of inhalation exposure, tetraethyl lead may cause sneezing, irritating the upper respiratory tract, and systemic effects such as; anxiety, nausea, headaches blurred speech, or euphoria. Last, ingestion exposure would cause nausea, vomiting diarrhea, and an increase in intracranial pressure and pulmonary edema (Odenbro, 2020). The chemical has severe long-term effects on the body such as interfering with the central nervous system and making the human reproductive and development processes toxic.
Sources of Exposure
Tetraethyl lead (TEL) is exposed to the environment through fumes from car exhaust after being used as an automotive gasoline, at least 1% of the content is expelled without being exchanged (Serih et al., 2022). Tel can also evaporate from gas tanks and stations and in case the chemical spills accidentally.
Control Measures
Pre-Contact Controls
1 Engineering controls help reduce the chance of exposure thus involving having local exhaust ventilation systems and isolating TEL handling and storage areas.
2 Administration measures
Assessing potential risk hazards before handling the chemical.
Safety storage in airtight and well-designed containers that cannot leak or spill
Create an emergency communication plan in case of accidents and train all the persons on how to handle TEL responsibly
3 Personal protective equipment (PPE) Give directives for using appropriate PPE such as gloves, respiratory protectors, lab coats, and safety goggles. The PPE should be inspected regularly and thoroughly and replaced when needed.
