Assignment 4. Hearing loss. Your experience. Reflection paper

Essay Instructions:

In order to better understand the implications of an acquired hearing loss, you are to wear a pair of earplugs for 30 minutes during any activity (e.g., getting ready for class in the morning, eating in the cafeteria). OR, if you have hearing loss, write a reflection about your experience with hearing loss and the way or situations in which it has impacted you must, what you would like others to know about hearing loss, etc. If you're using earbuds, please do not blast music. That is how you get noise-induced hearing loss which is something we want to prevent!

This assignment is going to be a little different. Please write a 2 page reflection paper that in some way reflects your thoughts and feelings about the experience with “temporary hearing loss.”

Consider these questions to guide your written response (you don’t have to answer them directly!). What activity did you complete with a hearing loss? What were some of the difficulties you experienced? How will this experience shape your future interactions with adults/children with hearing loss?

Please upload your response as a .doc or .pdf file. Due to inaccessibility, no .pages files will be accepted.

Also, please make sure your writing is well-written and grammatically correct (i.e., proofread!). It may be wise to include an introduction and conclusion paragraph to introduce the topic and sum up the main points. Moreover, it is nice to show synthesis of material learned in class. For example, in the introduction, introduce the topic of acquired hearing loss based on what you know from class or your book.

It is important to note that there are different factors that are likely to contribute to acquired hearing loss; these include chronic ear infections, measles, meningitis, head injuries, excessive noises, and foreign materials, which are likely to block the ear canal. The literature examines and evaluates the experiences of people with hearing loss.
To examine and understand the experiences of individuals with hearing loss, I wore earplugs for thirty minutes when taking food in the cafeteria. During this time, I tried communicating and interacting with other individuals using sign language. Additionally, I also tried evaluating the experiences that people with hearing loss go through, particularly when interacting and living with people who have no hearing problems. One area that was necessary to look into is finding if people have the skills and competencies needed for interacting effectively with those who have hearing deficiencies.
There are several difficulties which were encountered during this activity; for instance, it was challenging communicating with the cooks as most did not understand the meaning of essential signs, which are commonly used by individuals with hearing problems. This was a major concern because learning institutions, as well as other public and pr...
