Sadness in the Portrait of Dr. Gachet
I believe that the artwork concerning "The Portrait of Dr. Gachet" reflects an inner emotional state of the subject since the artist captured more than the subject’s likeness. The artwork reveals a sad emotional state on the subject. Viewing the artwork elicits specific feelings of worry and concern.
The artwork’s description shows that Van Gogh, the artist, committed suicide less than two months following the work, hence the sad emotional state of the artwork's subject ("Mind and Body," n.d, p. 4). The artwork depicts intense sadness and agitation since the artist employed color saturation of thick paint, tight swirls, and emphatic dashes ("Mind and Body," n.d, p. 4). Moreover, the artist reflected nervousness and sadness emotion states as the subject has a frowning face and his right hand is on his cheek. Therefore, the artwork reflects that he is considering something due to his sadness. I get concerned and worry feelings after viewing the artwork since I wonder why the artist was sad. I think of what the artist could have been going through that made him sad as reflected in his work. I wonder whether he had a broken heart or if he had mental or personal issues that made him commit suicide eventually.
