McQueen and John Galliano are renowned designers for their fantastic work in fashion and clothing. Their works incorporate different aspects of cultural appreciation and appropriation. They share differences and similarities regarding their artistic perceptions. However, despite the notable differences in cultural appreciation and appropriation, both have succeeded in their fashion collection work. This paper discusses both McQueen and Galliano's appropriation vs. appreciation collections and what both designers have learned regarding the appropriation and appreciation aspects. The paper also sheds light on what we have known as the customers, what designers should be aware of, and what issues companies should embrace during collections' releases.
Cultural Appreciation: Alexander McQueen
In his design collections, McQueen noted and embraced the need for cultural appreciation in his works. His collection encompasses various cultural traditions and artistic forms, which he appreciated and respected. The aspects he embraced in cultural appreciation entail cultural elements' exploration with substantial sensitivity (WWD, 2020). For instance, his well-renowned collection "Voss" was deeply rooted in Japanese cultural traditions and practices, which he fully embraced and appreciated. McQueen also portrayed a collaborative approach by working closely with other artists, including those from minority communities (Clairedrichardson, 2012). Working closely with individuals from different cultures helped emphasize the perceived cultural elements with respect while maintaining their authenticity (Blake, 2017). McQueen's works also embraced aspects of artistic expression in their respective forms. The perceived collections he created embraced visual aspects while appreciating other people's cultural conformations.
Cultural Appropriation and Reflection: John Galliano
In his career, Galliano's collections appeared to embrace various aspects of cultural appropriation features. For instance, he used annoying and disrespectful Native American symbols and motives in his "Galliano Gazette" collection (Somethingvain, 2015). The collection highlights the need to identify and mend any mistakes likely to cause harm following fashion's cultural appropriation. Galliano also portrays aspects of reflection and substantial growth in his collection work. In one of his incidences, for instance, he noted the mistakes made in his previous works and apologized for the inconvenience caused.
