I am commissioning and propose that you represent me as best as you can as I know you are one of the most respected and renowned artists of our era. It is an honor for me to choose you based on your reputation and you can interpret your idea about me from your own point of view but still focus on a religious demonstrated by the choice of surroundings and your depiction of me. This work will be viewed by people representing me as accurate as possible will be crucial since many people visiting the church will likely view the portrait. As you are well aware we the religious figureheads play an important role in the society, and by commissioning this portrait I hope and pray that you will take your time to represent and this will also reflect your expertise.
As is the case with other popes and prices commissions the paintings influence the choice of subject, size, and materials of the artworks that are to be displayed in churches. I prefer the oil on canvas painting, but oil on wood panel portraiture is also a good option. The oil paintings are clear and compared to the frescoes. Renaissance faces concentrated on portraits that were mostly pictures on panel and canvas, sculptures, public monuments (Syson, 2008). In the past, I commissioned paintings and decorations that were elegant mainly fresco paintings, and I hope to make changes so that people can identify with the portrait and other paintings.
I have also noticed that the oil paintings allow the artists to use even bright colors and varied surface texture. The painting guides a viewer’s response to the people’s depiction as is the main picture. This portrait is more personalized because it depicts a single person in a specific environment. By painting the portrait you will also explore innovations in technique and expression using oil, one of the most versatile materials. The church will continue to support art, which is a reflection of the society and artistic expression.
Portraits have played an important role in depicting the history of the popes since they reflect at certain eras. For fellow Catholics, these portraits show spiritual control of the Church, but they are also important in showing the papal intentions to reassure the people about the role of the popes in advancing God’s work. Paintings on biblical narrative remain powerful because all Christians can relate with them and they show submission to the divine, but for the portraits there is distinctiveness. Some of the religious paintings also tend to represent the sacrament, but with this portrait the pope sits alone since this is the subject of the painting.
The commissioned artwork would show me on a chair depicting an authority figure and reinforce the importance of the Catholic Church in the society. At the same time, focus on serenity and spiritual calm will highlight the importance of the church. The painting will be similar to other pope portraits, but distinct enough so that I am easily recognizable. The painting will represent me as common in many pope paintings where popes are in the papal chairs. Commissioning the paintings is linked to context and symbolism is prioritized to make the portraits stand out.
Religious imagery that adorns the parish churches is the most common in religious art, but portraiture still reflects the place of the Papal States in advancing religion. As you have previously been commissioned to paint other portraits you and this is a good opportunity to further demonstrate your skills. Even though, the painting is for the pope to enjoy the art work, it is placed in a church and not open to the public at all times. The commission of papal portraits is taken seriously as reflected, but competition among artists to show their expertise. Many of the portraits are mostly found in the court circles, with information on the on how they reproduced, by who and for whom they were produced (Falomir, 2009).
