Visual Analysis of Lady Commonwealth

Essay Instructions:

This project is an individual project to be completed as a preliminary exercise for the Project and it will serve as your Mid-Term. You will complete your Formal Analysis of a work of art while viewing artwork in a gallery or museum. This analysis essay will be completed in conjunction with references to the text and class lectures. Included in the analysis is a schematic drawing that the student develops to break down the artwork into its formal elements.

The 2-3 typed, double spaced pages will also include a photo or reproduction (if available) along with your sketch/study of the artwork. This essay will be completed in conjunction with references to the text (see below), and class lectures. Using information from the text (from the student toolkit xvi-xx and from chapters 3 – 7) you will study the work closely, taking extensive notes on the interaction of the elements of art (line, shape, value, color, texture), the principles of art (unity, balance, rhythm, proportion), and the manner in which these elements and principles create the design and affect and/or control eye movement. A descriptive formal analysis will allow you to investigate the communicative ideas behind the work of art. Consider how the content of the picture/sculpture is formed in terms of the artist's use of BOTH Theme and Design.

Included in the analysis is a schematic drawing that the student develops to break down the artwork into its formal elements.

Visual Analysis of Lady Commonwealth

TITLE: LADY COMMONWEALTH
DATE: AUGUST, 2015
DIMENSIONS: 348 x 348
ADDRESS: 1401 N 3RD ST, HARRISBURG, PA 17102
MUSEUM LINK:
The artwork “lady commonwealth” is a painting from Susquehanna Art Museum. The work was created in 2015 by Daniel Finch, an artist who is widely recognized for his realistic exhibitions. The piece depicts a woman’s face on the wall of a building. At a closer look, you’ll realize, not only does she look calm but also thoughtful and powerful. The artwork is one-sided and it has covered the whole front-side of the wall.
The portrait is a colorful representation of Miss Commonwealth Statue with several visual elements of art and principles of design. Finch has used the organic shape in the artwork alongside a wide range of colors, and decorations. First, he descriptively uses the organic shape to display the outline of the art, then he creatively paints the whole portrait. Secondly, Lady Commonwealth’s hair, face, and neck have a gray color. However, the background is in a solid mixture of white and blue hues. Additionally, the painting is composed of decorations in the form of a white tree branch with white, black, brown and red flowers, and a white bird sucking nectar.
In detail, lady commonwealth hair, eyes, and neck have been emphasized, and the dominant elements are on her thick and wavy hair which is complemented by a lower value. Finch uses implied lines on the strands of the lady’s hair to direct viewers’ eyes around the head of the artwork. The implied lines control the eye movement from the right bottom, middle, and right behind the head because the strands have been painted in a uniform direction.
Moreover, the negative space is balanced asymmetrically. The attention is drawn to the background by the use of intense colors of white and blue. That large area is counter-balanced by the rest of the composition in the portrait, which is predominantly grey. Also, one can easily highlight the use of space in the work. The lady’s painting on the left side takes a wider area while the remaining space on the left has a branch with its flowers. Therefore, not only is the visual lighting in the background and the flowers strong enough to balance the lady’s po...
