Hotel Rwanda: The Movie
Hotel Rwanda is a story that revolves around the manager of a four star rated hotel in the country’s capital of Kigali, at the heart of the vile acts of genocide that were witnessed, in the small central African republic of Rwanda. Minority Tutsis were being massacred by the Hutus, around 1994 and his laudable efforts to save innocent Tutsis lives during that murky period forms the entire plot of the movie.
The setting of the movie is in 1994, where almost a million people, mostly of Tutsi origin were murdered, in a country that is composed of only two tribes, that is the Hutus and the Tutsi. The Hutus had always felt disgruntled by the Tutsi minority’s control of economic and political areas of the government, and only needed an impetus in the assassination of the Hutu president Habyarimana, on April 6, 1994, to set their tempers their flaring, and avenge the death of their president. This saw the hunting down of the Tutsi civilians, which degenerated into mass murder and rape. Paul Rusesabagina, the manager of the Hotel des Mile Collines, used his position and benevolence, to save the lives of the Tutsis and moderate Hutus. He offered them shelter during the entire one hundred day period, that the mayhem lasted, through bribery antics to avert the Hutu militia attacks. The movie was filmed in Johannesburg, South Africa and Kigali, Rwanda and the main character of Paul Rusesabagina is meticulously played by Don Cheadle.
