Cool Jazz: Blue in Green by Miles Davis

Essay Instructions:

One of the course objectives is “to recognize the great jazz innovators and their contributions to jazz music.” Your end-of-term written assignment (approximately 500-600 words, typewritten) is to reflect upon what you have learned about jazz—and about music—and to examine how that knowledge has helped you gain an appreciation for jazz music.

For this assignment you can discuss either a jazz style or a particular performer that *we have studied in the class. To examine this style or performer, you are to select a jazz recording that has not been featured in the online lessons, unit listening lists, discussion boards, or supplementary recordings.

*Note: You may also choose a performer or style that we have NOT studied in the class as long as your selected recording is also NOT from the class.

Pick a piece that you especially like, or that you find moving or memorable. As a header for your paper, be sure to cite the recording details: the group (or solo performer), the title of the piece, the composer, all performers and instruments, and the record publisher.

Consider the piece in light of what you have learned in your studies. Examine the work through careful, attentive listening, and analyze a portion of the piece to demonstrate aspects of the knowledge you have gained in your studies.

Has the knowledge you have gained enhanced your appreciation of jazz music? Has it changed your view of jazz? Do you hear music differently as a result? Elaborate.

Cool Jazz
This assignment will primarily focus on cool Jazz style and "Blue in Green" which is one of the music recordings by Miles Davis. This recording remains to be a favorite among many jazz listeners. Having been released in 1959 in the "Kind of Blue" album, the recording is quite legendary. It showcases the great relevance that Miles Davis had in the music industry, particularly the jazz world (Etinde & Crompton, 2019). The composers of the recording were Favis and Bill Evans, who also acted as a pianist. Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Julian Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Comb were the main performers in the recording. Bill Evans acted as the pianist, Davis Miles played the Trumpet, Jimmu Conn played the drums, Julian Adderley played the alto saxophone, and John Coltrane played the tenor saxophone. In contrast, Paul Chambers played the double bass instrument. The recording publisher was Columbia Records which acted as Miles Davis's recording label throughout his music career (Rea, 2020). The historical background of cool Jazz dates back to the 1950s and was considered a harmonious, relaxing, and slower-paced type of jazz music. It emerged as a response to the 1940s bebop style of Jazz that was highly energetic. Most people appreciated cool Jazz since it was a complete contrast to the bebop style of Jazz.
The "Blue in Green" album is particularly interesting and memorable due to its harmonic structure. Studying different aspects of jazz music and knowing the great significance of harmony in making perfectly enjoyable cool jazz music informed my selection of the "Blue in Green" Album. The re...
