Lesson 10

The "Virtuoso" Singer

The "Virtuoso" Singer

Many of the same rules apply to the "virtuoso" singer—conviction is still key and conveying emotion is paramount. The difference is the possible added dimension of impressing people with range and technique. This can, of course, be a double-edged sword. Here are a list of virtuoso singers: Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Ariana Grande, Queen (Freddy Mercury).

Having virtuoso singing chops can open up more options in terms of repertoire, and could give the singer an expanded range of how to express oneself vocally. This is great, but not without potential pitfalls. A couple to consider:

Virtuoso vocal expression in the service of the emotion of the song can be an effective tool. Gratuitous use of vocal gymnastics in order to impress the listener, while often a crowd-pleasing live ego-boost, can backfire on a recording. Intention is important here.

Sometimes great singers wind up embarrassing themselves in the long run due to the songs they choose to sing; if your artist sounds good singing anything, it's easier to let yourself become less rigorous in the selection of material. It's good to ask the question, "Will we still be proud of this record in twenty years?"

Choose a record that epitomizes your vision of the "virtuoso" singer. Listen to the record with fresh ears, using the listening techniques you've been developing. Write a short analysis of the record.

In your analysis:

Include the name of the artist, song title and genre.

Chart the form of the record and identify the developing emotions conveyed throughout.

Locate the climax.

Analyze how the virtuoso elements of the vocal performance contribute to the record's emotional impact.

Analyze the emotional contour of the vocal and its contribution to the emotions of the record.

Comment on other aspects of the record that you haven’t yet analyzed (artist’s identity, instrumental arrangement and performance, groove and lyrics).

PART 2

Choose a record that illustrates a great vocal that works due to the singer's conviction and/or personality, rather than their vocal range and technique. Listen to the record with fresh ears, using the techniques you've been developing. Write a short analysis of the record.

In your analysis:

Include the name of the artist, song title and genre.

Chart the form of the record and identify the developing emotions conveyed throughout.

Locate the climax.

Analyze how the singer's conviction and/or personality contributes to the record's emotional impact.

Analyze the emotional contour of the vocal and its contribution to the emotions of the record.

Comment on other aspects of the record that you haven’t yet analyzed (artist’s identity, instrumental arrangement and performance, groove and lyrics).

You don't need to do an entire production timeline of each of these records (although you're certainly welcome to). A list of the form with the climax indicated will suffice.

It's a horrible sensation to have. The incredible song "Je Suis Malade" tells the heartbreaking narrative of a person who has lost the person they loved in a lovely and moving way. This well-known chanson tune is just as well-known in French as "Autumn Leaves" is in the United States. In 1973, the French singer Serge Lama was the one who first wrote and sang "Je Suis Malade," although Alice Dona is the one who penned the song. It was the first tune of Lama's album of the same name, which was released in 2013. Sadly, the musicians who performed this gem after Lama were the ones who brought it to wider attention and made it renowned, not Lama himself. The song "Je suis malade" is about the effects of passionate love, which may lead to disease and deprivation. It's the sort that isn't good for your health at all. It is based on actual events. "At the time I wrote it, I was over over heels in love with a married lady who would eventually become my wife." - Serge Lama. Even if you aren't familiar with the song's lyricism, it is still possible to get the sense that the song is filled with resentment at Empress. The second reason was that he was venting his rage because of his mother, who made him feel unclean and unattractive. When he is away from his mother, he feels abandoned, like a kid who has been placed in an orphanage. In any case, regardless of whether or not you understand the lyrics, the music is lovely. Over the years, a great number of performers have provided their own unique take on this song. For the sake of this analysis, I picked two artists that are quite distinct from one another, are original, ...
