Last year I worked at a store in the neighborhood. During the tenure, my supervisor noticed that most of the employees did not have cohesion, and they seemed to differ in their attitudes towards other colleagues. The supervisor decided to formulate a way that could unite all the employees. So he decided to organize an excursion for all the twenty employees because he thought that this would offer better morale, better decision making, and cost effectiveness. Therefore, we went camping as a team.
We went camping over the weekend. The whole group was divided into teams of seven people. Each team had an instructor that was hired to oversee the team performance and prepare a report. I was the group leader because all the other members could not agree to take the role. My team comprised of Bill, Martha, Withers, Erick, Edward, Janice, and I. All these team members were from different departments at the job, hence they could not recognize each other. However, Edward and Erick seemed to know each other because they earlier had issues over a girlfriend in the neighborhood. Edward had hit on Erick’s girlfriend, and she had left Erick for Edward. Since then Erick had grown cold towards Edward. This is when I realized that it would take an extra effort to unite the whole team, because of their differences.
The team was required to take different directions about a kilometer from the meeting center. We were then required to communicate with each member of our team and guide each other towards a common meeting point. We met and agreed on what we wanted to achieve. Our major objective was to win as a team. We established ground rules that were to be adhered to. I talked to the team and made them understand that their differences should be set aside, and work as a team. Our formulated plan for achieving this was that we would allow two members to guide each other through the exercise. Erick was the one that was to guide Edward. The team was to meet at the starting point at the designated time. Every member’s active participation was required. The members were then to discuss as pairs and come up with the best way they could handle their task. This was then discussed in the group.
On the afternoon of the competition, all the teams gathered. Erick and Edward went aside and started discussing in low tones. To my amazement, they came up with the name of the group as ‘Panthers’. Everybody became surprised and elated. We all congratulated Erick and Edward on their initiative. All other members laid out their strategies.
