Key Changes in Organizational Structure
In its 30-year history, there have been profound changes through Burning Man, especially organizational transformation. The company was established as an informal gathering on a beach. Still, it would soon change and become involved in a more significant and organized event requiring an official structure. One of the significant changes happened in the 1990s, as the company sought to manage its growth, with the Black Rock City LLC (BRC LLC) initiated and created for handling both the operational and logistical needs, especially ticketing, permits, and infrastructure in Black Rock City (Walkske, 2018). Transformed happened through the years, growing in size and influence as the founders sought to ensure the long-term preservation of its core values and principles. Therefore, a significant change would be seen in the organizational structures. In 2014, BRC LLC will be transformed into the Burning Man Project (BMP), running as a nonprofit organization. Through the transformation, Burning Man would later focus on its mission and values rather than being concerned over profit. The organization embeds its principles in a charitable and mission-driven organization that targets culture beyond the original event.
LLC and Current vs. Prior Structure
In the past, LLC had been behaving like a nonprofit organization prioritizing community-oriented values over profit. Instead of focusing on maximizing revenue, its funds would be invested into infrastructure creation and support installation of significant art. Furthermore, the organization focused on expanding facilities to accommodate the unique community at Burning Mans. Also, the organization supported artists using partial grants and similarly advanced the underlying principles of self-expression and radial inclusion (Walkske, 2018). This move aligned more with its mission-driven nonprofit approach and not entirely on the initial for-profits.
