Indeed, miscellaneous itemized deductions are usually done when they exceed 2% of the AGI. The last change to financial law, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) ensured that there were several items that were taken off the list of miscellaneous itemized deductions. These include investment and hobby expenses as well as union dues. I, therefore, think that your discussion seems to have made a slight error in listing the union dues as part of the deductions since the Act clearly listed it out.
