Australia as a Financial Centre
The Commonwealth of Australia is a vast and diverse country located in the southern hemisphere. As the world's sixth-largest country by total area, Australia is known for its stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and vibrant cities. With a population of over 25 million people, it is a multicultural nation that embraces a unique blend of Indigenous heritage and immigrant cultures. This essay examines the country’s financial sector.
Development of Australia Financial Centre
The development of Australia as a financial center can be traced to the establishment of the Australian Financial Centre Forum on September 26, 2008, by the Ministry of Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs. The forum was intended to facilitate the growth of the country’s financial sector to enable it to leverage business opportunities available in the region. In addition, the forum was intended to spur collaboration between the government and the financial sector in a bid to ensure that the sector could expand into global markets. The closeness of the country to the fastest-growing region at the time meant that the Australian financial sector could play a key role in facilitating access to a wide range of financial services such as financial development, retirement income schemes, insurance products, and asset management among other (Mules, 2015). While the country had a sophisticated and advanced financial sector in the region, the country was still struggling to leverage its skills and expertise in the region and beyond.
Notably, the forum was intended to create an environment that allowed for increased international engagement for Australian fund managers and Australian banks. With time, the country has developed a strong and sophisticated financial sector that plays a major role as a financial sector in the Asia-Pacific region. Some of the key factors that have played a part in establishing Australia as a financial sector include economic stability, robust infrastructure, a well-regulated environment, and the presence of a highly skilled workforce. Australia's finance sector contributes significantly to the country's economy and offers a wide range of financial services domestically and internationally. Presently, the country has roughly US$ 850 billion of the contestable pool of funds under investment.
Financial Service in Australia
Following the government's concerted efforts to grow Australia as a financial centre, there are several financial services that one can access in the country. First, the country has managed to enhance the capacity of local players and attract global competitors who offer asset-backed debt financing in the country. Consequently, the asset-based finance and leasing of the country facilitate nearly 40 percent of the capital expenditures in the country and include global players such as CIT Financial, GE Commercial Finance, and other key finance players in the world. Second, Australia has managed to establish one of the biggest superannuation industries in the world. Driven by the government-backed retirement scheme, the country’s fund management provides a myriad of opportunities for fund managers and companies that provide related services (Australian Government, 2023). The sector is boosted by the existence of sophisticated traders and has attracted major players such as BNP Paribas, Invesco, Vanguard, Aberdeen, and Allianz among others. Third, the financial sector also offers hedge fund services that offer a wide range of investment management services for various asset classes such as fixed income, asset classes, infrastructure, and real estate among others.
Fourth, the Australian finance sector also offers highly developed, sophisticated, and competitive insurance services. Australia has a robust insurance sector that provides life insurance, general insurance, health insurance, and reinsurance services. Insurance companies in Australia offer coverage for individuals, businesses, and specialized sectors such as agriculture and mining. Fifth, the country offers a diverse set of banking services. The banking sector in Australia comprises both domestic and international banks, offering a wide array of services such as retail banking, corporate banking, lending, and trade finance. Sixth, the country has a vibrant capital market. The primary stock exchange in Australia is the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), which facilitates the trading of equities, derivatives, and debt securities, providing companies with opportunities to raise capital. In such a way, the country has a comprehensive range of financial services.
Role of Stock Exchange
Notably, the development of a stock market in a country is important as it acts to supplement the banking system of a given country. Notably, the Australian stock market is one of the most developed markets in the world. There are multiple players in the Australian capital markets but the three major players are the Australian Securities Exchange Group, the National Stock Exchange of Australia, and the Asia-Pacific Stock Exchange. Of these, the most dominant stock exchange is the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX).
In Australia, the capital market supports the economic development of the country in multiple ways. Notably, the stock exchange oversees the mobilization of domestic savings to ensure that the financial resources of the domestic savings are reallocated from the dormant agents to the active agents (Masoud, 2013). Researchers have shown that the stock markets play a key role in facilitating the mobilization of saving and directing them toward productive endeavours (Masoud, 2013). The stock exchange also plays a leading role in minimizing information costs by providing an easy means through which firms can disseminate their information. It is also essential to note that stock markets have been observed to significantly provide liquidity that allows firms to implement long-term projects with long-term payoffs (Masoud, 2013). To this end, ASX and other players provide capital to investors and facilitate the inflow of international capital into the country. Thus, the stock exchange plays a major role in the Australian economy.
Role of the Central Bank in Developing the Financial Sector
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) as the central bank of Australia plays a comprehensive and dynamic role in developing the Australian Financial Sector. To this end, the RBA formulates and implements moneta...
