Self-reflection resulting a knowledge of our personal strengths and weaknesses is an important leader competency. For a leader to capitalize on personal leadership strengths, first that leader must recognize those strengths. Conversely, a leader must recognize his personal leadership weaknesses to compensate for those weaknesses in other ways. Taking responsibility for our leadership weaknesses and doing something about it is demonstrating your integrity. Have you worked for/with a leader who was not self-aware of his or her leadership weaknesses? If so, what was the effect on mission and morale? Did you confront the leader about this? Why or why not?

Leader Self-Awareness
In the past, I have worked with a leader who was unaware of his leadership weaknesses. Rather than acknowledge he was weak in a particular area of leadership, such as giving credit where it is due, he always got defensive about his actions. This lack of self-awareness about his leadership weaknesses indicates a lack of reflection. According to Kamena (n.d., 3), reflection allows leaders to gain a deeper understanding and insight, which enhances their self-awareness. When leaders are equipped with self-awareness, they add value to their teams.
The lack of the leader’s self-awareness about his leadership weakness was detrimental to employees. Employees, myself included, felt unmotivated in our work because the leader never gave credit or acknowledged our effort. He also never took ownership of his actions and how they contributed to the team's struggle. According to Burress (“Leaders must empower their teams,” 2023), leaders are less likely to motivate their units when unaware of how their weaknesses affect employees. He was also unable to build on employees' strengths and, as a result, could not boost their morale. Leaders who are unaware of their weaknesses feel threatened by the strengths of others and cannot build on them (Beissner and Heyler, “Value of Leader Humility,” 2020...
