Self and social awareness
Strengths:
One aspect that I am strong at is self-awareness. Self-awareness involves understanding one's self. Therefore, being self-aware enables me to know my strengths and limitations and act appropriately. For instance, I know things that anger me. Therefore, when I expect such things to happen, I either avoid the situations or control my responses to such stimuli that may annoy me. Self-awareness is a strength because without understanding oneself, it is hard to control one's reactions.
Another strength is knowing how others perceive me. Other people's perceptions are important because it determines how people associate with others. Understanding how others see me enables me to understand their responses and help them see me in a good way.
Areas of Improvement:
I need to improve my reading of other people. I find it hard to understand people's emotions. For instance, I find it challenging to understand people from different cultures.
I want to improve my social awareness better. Social awareness is important because while understanding oneself is essential, understanding others helps to empathize with them regardless of their cultures.
Desired Outcome (short-term goal):
Improving my knowledge of others to improve my awareness of them. Being knowledgeable enables people to develop empathy. Being knowledgeable about other people's needs and issues may help me be prepared to interact with them more successfully and build stronger relationships. I want to develop knowledge about American diversity and understand as many cultures as possible to be respectful to diverse people.
Goal Statement (long-term goal):
I want to be more culturally competent by applying the knowledge I will gain from Strayer to build my cultural competence. Cultural competence involves understanding other people's cultures and responding effectively to people from diverse cultures.
Practices for Growth:
Reading widely. Reading materials from various cultures and authors may help expose me to the various cultural practices in the US and the world. I hope to use the Strayer library to read about cultural competence, communication and other related topics that may help me gain more knowledge.
I also plan to make more diverse friends. To understand others, I must interact with them. Interacting with various people will help me understand my prejudices and help me practice my cultural competence before I get to my profession. I hope to make friends with people regardless of their ethnicities and beliefs to appreciate the differences among people.
Being open and asking questions where I do not understand others. It is important to understand people and their needs when dealing with them. Therefore, I will always seek clarity to ensure that I remain respectful and aware in my interactions with others.

Barriers that I expect include the lack of adequate time and bias.
The time limitation will be solved by using my time with diverse people. Working with peers from diverse cultures in teams will enable me to perform my classwork while also interacting with others simultaneously. Prioritizing may also help solve the time issue. Prioritizing involves doing things based on their importance.
Concerning bias, I will always be aware of potential bias and be fair to others.
