We do not often pause to notice these connections. This exercise will ask you to evaluate your purchasing practices concerning global economic patterns of production. Steps: This exercise consists of two parts. The first part will ask you to investigate your world by taking part in a global inventory. The second part will require you to consider your inventory with regard economic flows in the global economy, first by reading an article from the New York Times and second by answering a series of questions. Part 1 1 Directions: Spend some time exploring the global connections of your own home. In the table below, please list 10 items that were made in 10 different countries. Include brand names when available. Be sure to explore your closet, pantry, refrigerator, and shelves. According to this article, the New York fashion company started importing its garments from China, and after the death of Mao Zedong, the company began to look for new supplies. They included Vietnam, Guatemala, and Indonesia who supplied brand products like Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus. However, more changes are likely going to be implemented because the search continues after there were v various industrial accidents which occurred as a result of poor working conditions, especially in Vietnam and Indonesia. This is because people avoid buying apparel from countries that do not protect the lives of its citizens. For example, the fatal fire accident in Bangladesh caused hundreds of deaths while the collapse of the Rana Plaza incident followed closely. The same episodes have also been witnessed in India and Vietnam and caused the death of two people, injuring many others. What reasons does this article cite for the present and changing patterns of this type of clothing production?The primary reason as to why these changes are taking place is because of poor working conditions the workers in these countries are exposed. For example, in Indonesia, the lethal fire killed hundreds of people, and in the same Month, Rana Plaza collapsed causing the death of two people, and nine were seriously injured. The same incident was also realized in Cambodia. Also, these workers are underpaid and forced to work overtime. Some of them come from impoverished backgrounds and have no otherwise but to go and work for these companies to feed their families and meet their needs.
