Introduction
Using biometric technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) in policing has become highly debatable, especially in Canada. New developments brought to light in a CBC News article discuss how police forces are constantly using these technologies. However, these tools refer to increased productivity, and relatively accurate results come with enormous ethical issues and adherence to regulations. Nevertheless, this essay will review the privacy, human rights, and legal implications of using biometrics and AI in policing, as well as the rationale for their regulation.
Privacy Concerns
Most issues surrounding the biometrics and AI systems in policing revolve around privacy violations. Parameters like face scans, fingerprints, and DNA are unique for every person and are used to identify a person without obtaining his voluntary consent. Issues that arise from the statistics collection, storage, and utilization include: who has access to this information, and how secure is it? Loss of data, theft, and scam through hacking is also a real possibility that can result in devastating privacy infringement, for example, through fake identity (Paliokosta, Stavroula - Tzaiin, 2024).
