The miniature guide to critical thinking concepts and tools- book
This is a two part assignment. Make sure you read both parts of the assignment and respond to both. The TedTalk and reading in the Critical Thinking Guide are used for both parts.
Part 1: Analyzing the Logic of a Presentation
First read pages 28 to 38 in the Critical Thinking Guide.
Then view the TedTalk by Dan Cohen titled "For argument's sake". Watch this tedtalk at least twice he moves through information quickly, take some notes.
Then go to page 29 in the Critical Thinking Guide and apply the "Template for Analyzing the Logic of an Article" to Cohen's tedtalk. For example:
1. The main purpose of this tedtalk is ___________________________.
2. The key question the speaker is addressing is ____________________________________. (Type out each numbered item 1 through 8 and fill in the blanks as you go, until you have completed all 8).
Part 2. Comparison and Contrast Analysis of two sources
Consider the remaining pages in the assigned reading p. 30-38 in context of what Cohen is saying about why we argue and why we need new arguments. Then write a short paragraph on what you find in these pages that reflects, explains, refutes or contradicts what Cohen is asserting, and explain why. Use specifics from both source in making this comparison and contrast analysis.
