Design Justification Communications & Media Coursework
Design Justification Guidelines (not necessarily in this order)
You will describe your project in the context of a range of relevant sources. Suggested source breakdown (this will vary depending on the nature of your particular project): Scholarly sources may comprise 1-2 of the sources on your list; primary examples may be more numerous (5-6); journalistic sources may be useful (2-3)
1. What field/industry does your project belong in? (medium, genre, subgenre); how would you describe what you're doing? What examples of work appear in this subfield? Who are the major players in this industry?
2. What scholars have discussed your field, the techniques used in the field, or theories that you find applicable to your project? Apply them to your work.
3. How has work in your field participated or been covered in journalistic sources? On social media?
4. Think about the audience and impact for similar works in your field. What kinds of design goals do the creators of those works have, and how successful were they? Think about the audience and potential impact of your project. What do you hope people take away from experiencing your work? Who will benefit most from your work? ]]
My design work is a photography with the theme of photography about depression. I will have some artistic techniques to show the world in the eyes of people with depression. I hope to arouse the society's attention and understanding of people with depression. I will also upload an attachment, which is some of the general concepts that I wrote when I originally planned to design this work. I hope this helps you in your work, thank you very much. If you have any questions, you can send me a message, thank you.

Concept Proposal
1 What field/industry does your project belong in? (medium, genre, subgenre); how would you describe what you are doing? What examples of work appear in this subfield? Who are the major players in this industry?
1 Based on the proposal provided, this project would primarily use printed (and published) photographs for its main medium. It is an artistic representation of how people with depression sees the world through the genre of photography. Specifically, this would use a relatively new sub-genre in the field of photography, which is depression photography that is mainly aimed at portraying the perception and experiences of people with the help of both photography and post-production techniques CITATION Bar17 \l 1033 (Barnes).
2 What scholars have discussed your field, the techniques used in the field, or theories that you find applicable to your project? Apply them to your work.
2 Ever since the inception of depression photography, a lot of scholars and practitioners alike have already utilized different techniques to vividly give an idea of how depression feels like in the minds of those who suffer from it. For example, in a study done by Hanieh and Walker, they asked depressed participants to take pictures of the world around them, based on the theme “who are you?”. Accordingly, their study showed that the participants have pictured a narrow range of subjects, which also showed their inclination to such themes. For this study, these themes (that shows the inclination of depressed person’s mind) could be used as the focus of the photographs that would be used. To compliment this, in terms of the technique and subject to focus on, another study done by Seko, about the themes and prevalance of self-injury photographs posted on social media, would be used. This could prove to be helpful, since this project is also intended to be published in social media.
