Coursework Instructions:
Overview
Ethics, as they pertain to religion, is about virtuous and wrong behavior and is exemplified in the tenets and morality espoused by religion. History is rife with religious clashes that escalated into a war such as the Crusades of the 11-15th centuries, or the “Thirty Years War” of the 1600s. Similar religious struggles continue today as revealed by daily news stories reporting instances of conflict in every corner of the globe. In this assignment, you examine one such report where religious ethical principles clash and conflict erupts!
Preparation
Examine a news article published within the last 18 months describing the ethical conflict followers face within or between the Muslim or Christian communities. As you read, consider the conflict's motivations, actions, and origins in the context of the religion(s) involved.
An example of an intra-religious conflict in Christianity pitted Irish Catholics against British Protestants in 1921, ultimately ending in the separation of Northern and Southern Ireland. A fundamental aspect of the conflict was the desire for freedom (of the Irish - (predominantly Catholic) from British (predominantly Protestant) rule. The two sides eventually became known as “nationalists” and “loyalists”. Each had very different views and agendas although both were Christian.
Of course, the conflict is more complex than just the fight for freedom. There were newsworthy elements that defined the conflict such as protest, intolerance, segregation, and instances of violence such as bombings, kidnappings, and murder. Where did it all begin?

Introduction
Religious populations in India have had to resolve severe ethical dilemmas, characteristic of religion's rapidly changing and sometimes even combative role in the contemporary world. This analysis focuses on a news article titled "'Eid means mourning': Muslims lynched in India after shock election result," tracing a moral dilemma that comes to the fore after an unexpected election outcome. The goal is to investigate the reasons behind the actions of all the parties involved, the beginning of the conflict, and the consequences seen from different perspectives.
Three Significant Characteristics of the Conflict
Motivations Behind the Conflict
Based on the news article, religious, social, and political factors remain the dominating source of the motivating force of the conflict. The religious ones source back to perennial conflicts between Hindu and Muslim populations in India. This could be due to facets such as community-based interests, which encompass questions of recognition of identity and tradition enmity. On the political aspect, the conflict is aggravated by the defeat in the elections of the Hindu majoritarian party led by PM Modi, which incited violent actions, escalating tensions (Sharma, 2024).
Actions Taken by the Parties Involved
These actions taken by the supporters of the Hindu majoritarian party include mob violence or lynching, especially against Muslims. Such actions have had drastic outcomes, including causing loss of lives, further fear in the Muslim community, and societal polarization. This is because the article captures real-life encounters of violence, including the outcomes that are usually felt within minutes or, in some cases,...
