Power, Politics, and Culture Paper
Power and politics constitute pervasive dimensions of organizational life, influencing decision-making, interpersonal relationships, and resource allocations. Power can be defined as an individual’s ability to influence their followers or subordinates, while politics is leveraging power to realize organizational or personal goals. Both politics and power have negative and positive implications on Target Corporation’s outcomes. Power can be seen via the hierarchical structure of an organization because those in higher positions wield more power and influence over resource allocation and decision-making. On the other hand, politics can be conceived as an instrument for obtaining and maintaining power in organizations, and it typically entails alliances, negotiations, and coalitions between groups and individuals seeking to augment their interests. Studying politics and power can greatly influence leadership behavior and enrich Target’s organizational culture. This paper discusses the influence of politics and power in the organization, sources of power, and how they can be utilized for improved organizational performance. It also offers recommendations on how politics and power can impact leadership behavior, geared to enhancing the organization’s culture.
Influence of Politics and Power
Understanding the Target’s dynamic of power and politics is vital for several reasons. It helps Target’s stakeholders to understand how individuals seek to obtain, strengthen, and leverage resources and power to achieve specific anticipated outcomes. This is particularly important when the organization, such as Target, is experiencing conflicts or uncertainties in decision-making and wants to reach a consensus. Understanding the dynamics of power and politics within the organization also allows individuals to make sense of the value of complex collaborations and simple persuasion in shaping the dynamics of the company’s environment (Kulachai, 2025). Organizational employees and leaders who understand the power and political dynamics affecting their company can easily enter a negotiation process tailored to achieve an understanding and reconcile different group interests (Kulachai, 2025). This is important in resolving conflicts within Target, as leaders and employees can create an agreement or a shared understanding using different political strategies.
Accordingly, understanding an organization's politics and power dynamics helps employees have the right emotional and psychological states to make sense of their perceived organizational politics (POP). Further, understanding political behaviors and organizational politics helps an individual influence workplace dynamics. This is particularly necessary in organizational settings where political interactions could significantly influence the workers and the company's overall effectiveness. Furthermore, organizational dynamics of power and politics could harm job performance and overall company effectiveness (Kulachai, 2025). Understanding politics and power dynamics in a company helps the leader to highlight their impact on job performance among employees, thus understanding the need to address issues such as political behavior, as well as remuneration and promotion policies. Lastly, POP could undermine the positive relationship between job performance and organizational commitment, thus underscoring the value of such an understanding in addressing the detrimental ramifications of politics and power in diverse organizational settings (Kulachai, 2025). Collectively, these reasons highlight the need to understand Target Corporation’s politics and power dynamics and thus ensure improved performance and organizational sustainability.
Culture significantly influences how individuals interact at the workplace. Power and politics affect Target’s culture in diverse ways. They can influence how people perceive and navigate organizational cultures. In a decentralized organizational structure like that of Target Corporation, such a framework can foster a culture of decision-making across different levels of the organization. While the chief executive officer and affiliates make significant decisions for the corporation, managers and their employees are tasked with making operational decisions, thus creating a framework where decisions are made across different levels to support Target’s su...
