Elections involve gatherings in which citizens elect representatives for their state or country (Herron et al. 2). Elections have been a tool of democracy since the seventeenth century. Elections are held at different times in different countries, depending on their constitutional laws. Elections in the United States (U.S.) include mid-term elections, Presidential elections, caucuses, and conventions. Electoral systems, on the other hand, are the rules and procedures through which elections are conducted. Electoral systems are devised and executed by a specific body (Herron et al. 4).
A majority electoral system is one in which the winning candidate is decided based on the highest number of votes (Linhart, Eric et al. 24). A proportional system allows different sides of the electorate to be represented equally within the elected body.
