Cultural Factors
The documentary explores childbirth practices in three different cultural contexts. These countries are the United States of America, Mexico, and Sweden. Conversely, the US is hospital-based, with the majority of women being attended to by obstetricians during childbirth. This shows that the medical ideological system could repress women's autonomy during childbirth, and they use more interventions like a C-section. Moreover, in Mexico, culturally appropriate birth practices, particularly amongst rural women, are explored within the documentary mainly due to rituals and the use of traditional medicines. Finally, in Sweden, childbirth practices blend medical and natural processes, giving women more choices in midwife-led births within hospitals with medical supervision but emphasizing natural birth (Berghammer, 2003).
Legal Factors
In the US, the service midwives offer is strictly controlled, limiting midwives' working capacity in helping women in hospitalizations. Conversely, Sweden supports midwifery through a more centralized healthcare system in which midwives practice autonomously as independent practitioners.
