The article looks at marital relationships between Chinese couples within the first few years. It specifically addresses how sacrifice and commitment influence marriage quality between Chinese couples. It asserts that Interpersonal harmony and collective obligation form the foundation of Chinese marriage. As a result, making sacrifices for spouses for the benefit of the relationship is common in Chinese weddings. Marital sacrifice occurs when one of the spouses in the relationship forgoes their immediate self-interest to promote the welfare of the relationship (Cao et al., 2017). This type of sacrifice is more common when trying to resolve a conflict. The conflict between interests can occur during the early stages of marriage when the spouses are still learning to understand each other. How well they can respond to these conflicts determines their marital well-being. According to the article, sacrifices show a higher level of commitment and satisfy the recipient, thus improving the overall quality of marriage. Couples are interdependent during the first few years of marriage, which motivates them to sacrifice more willingly. Those who engage in sacrifices more frequently view it as a relationship strategy to improve the overall well-being of the relationship. However, sacrifices can also have negative consequences, as one spouse may take advantage of the other or fail to reciprocate the action. The study explored two major hypotheses; the beneficial effect and the detrimental effect hypothesis. The results showed that spouses think and act according to the meaning they attribute to their partners' behaviors, but they can be influenced by broader relationship factors such as commitment.
