Different Problem-Solving Strategies and the Division Algorithm

Coursework Instructions:

Using the textbook-"A Problem Solving Approach to Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers"

from chapters 1-3 answer the following questions..

1. Identify at least five different problem-solving strategies. Discuss when and how you would use each of these strategies to solve a problem. Create a problem, then select an appropriate strategy and describe how you would teach a student to use this strategy to solve the problem.

2. Discuss various methods you might use to teach the commutative property and the associative property of addition. Explain how these properties are used in everyday life and why they are important to understand.

3. In your own words, explain the division algorithm. Pick two examples that you would use in class to explain this algorithm. Why did you pick those examples?

1 Identify at least five different problem-solving strategies. Discuss when and how you would use each of these strategies to solve a problem. Create a problem, select an appropriate strategy, and describe how you would teach a student to use it to solve the problem.
1 The five different examples of problem-solving strategies that I chose are pattern identification and recognition, problem-solving, diagram creation, deductive reasoning, and trial-and-error. First, I would use pattern identification and recognition for math problems that generally have apparent patterns. Second, problem-solving could be used in cases of word problems. Third, deductive reasoning could also be used for numerical and word problems. Fourth, diagram creation could be used for visualizing different ideas and concepts. Fifth, trial-and-error could be used if there are a lot of time and only a few choices.
One example of a problem that requires pattern recognition is when a string of numbers seems to be randomly placed beside one another. Pattern recognition would be best in this case.
