Cristina Henriquez's "The Book of Unknown Americans" Coursework

Coursework Instructions:

Prompt from Professor:

Read pages 67 through page 126 in Henriquez' The Book of Unknown Americans then complete the following:

There are 3 parts that I want you to answer: first part answer the "Observation", second answer the "Passage" part, and finally answer the "Question" part.

Each part the (Observation, Passage and Question) should each be answered with a minimum of 180 words for at least a total of 2 pages.

* Part 1: Observation: Write a few sentences about something you found interesting or worthy of discussion. It could be something thematic, like its point of view on the American Dream. Or it could be an observation about issues of gender, sexuality, psychology, socioeconomic class, etc. Or, it could be something generally along those lines.

* Part 2: Passage: Look for a quote from the readings of page 67 through 126 of Cristina Henriquez's "The Book of Unknown Americans" that stands out to you for one reason or another then once you find a quote make sure to write the page number and explain as best you can what that reason is that it stands out to you. It might be admiring or critiquing the construction of the language, the idea being discussed, its relevance to some larger concept, etc.

* Part 3: Question: Now I want you to write down a question or two about something you don't quite understand or something on which you just would like other students' perspective.

Again reminder for each of the three parts your answer should be with a minimum of 180 words and a total of 2 pages.

Notes from me to the writer:

• This assignment doesn't require it for it to be answered like an essay but rather just a paragraph for each part.

* The assignment must be done in Times New Roman Font Size 12 with 1 inch margins all around.

• The book I have is the 2014 version of Cristina Henriquez's "The Book of Unknown Americans" with ISBN 978-0-345-80640-6

I did include image files with screenshots of the pages that include Cristina Henriquez's "The Book of Unknown Americans" pages 67 through page 126 in chronological order. I noticed that only the odd pages have the actual page numbers on the book.

The first 20 image files are in this order form and the remaining 40 image screenshots are in the

The Book of Unknown Americans
Observation
Cristina Henriquez through her writings in The Book of Unknown Americans has raised many interesting issues ranging from gender issues, socio-economic status, and sexuality among many others. However, one issue that stands out above the others as the most interesting one is how she creates a perception over how the people of Panama view America as a country. It is evident from the book that Mayor’s family who originates from Panama flew away from their country and gained United States citizenship due to the insecurity back there. This part alone seems interesting as it brings out some glimpse of irony as America; a country they appear to feel safe in is the same one that is blamed for insecurity in Panama. This theme gets even more intriguing when Rafael becomes afraid of going back to Panama out of fear that he is likely to receive a hostile reception in his high school reunion party as most of his peers back there perceive him not only as a proponent of their oppressor but also as a member of their oppressor. Ironically, Rafael’s family having fled away from Panama out of insecurity begins to feel insecure in the United States especially when the September 11 attack occurred.
Passage
One of the quotes that stand out in The Book of Unknown Americans is this one on page 73 which reads “I write some times, “I went on. “Like I might write, ‘Not...
