* Einstein on the Beach (1976)- portrayed Einstein as a dreamer and scientist. In performance, the recurrent images of a spaceship, a train, and a trial seemed to critique the scientific progress of the time. However, the overall arrangement of hypnotic movements, images, and trance-like music attracted the audience more (Theatre Histories An Introduction 3rd Edition “Theatre of observation and images” 2).
* Life and Times of Joseph Stalin- was a 12-hour “opera” performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1973, and it consisted of seven acts played by 140 actors (Theatre Histories An Introduction 3rd Edition “Theatre of observation and images” 2).
(B)- I would characterize his work to fall under “Theatre of Images.” Yes, I would like it because he creatively presented his work with surreal landscapes of disjointed, dream-like images with a mixture of trance music to entertain his audience.
(2) Anna Deavere Smith- her works “Fires in the Mirror” (1992) and “Twilight: Los Angeles,” 1992 (1994), which portrayed urban unrest in the U.S., were most imaginative because these were one-person shows which emphasized on language but borrowed from video and film documentary methods. Anna Smith interviewed those involved in events but performed their natural gestures and words, selecting the “shots” and editing the results (Theatre Histories An Introduction 3rd Edition “Theatre of observation and images” 4).
