My Perspective on the American Dream

Coursework Instructions:
For this writing assignment, your goal is to attain an informed perspective on the American Dream, to reflect on its meaning and relevance to your own life, and to share your view in a well written commentary of at least 500 words. Read the following materials: "The American Dream" (Wikipedia) - https://en(dot)wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/American_Dream "Americans are Split Over the State of The American Dream" (Pew Research Institute) - https://www(dot)pewresearch(dot)org/short-reads/2024/07/02/americans-are-split-over-the-state-of-the-american-dream/ "What is the American Dream?" (Investopedia) - https://www(dot)investopedia(dot)com/terms/a/american-dream.asp "What Exactly is 'The American Dream?'" (Reddit, r/AskAnAmerican) - https://www(dot)reddit(dot)com/r/AskAnAmerican/comments/savitu/what_exactly_is_the_american_dream/ After you read all of them, consider the perspectives presented by each source. Think about the reliability of each source and its worldview and biases. Compare their definitions and justifications. Contemplate which definitions and descriptions you find most compelling and why. After careful thought, create a commentary on the American Dream as it relates to you. Provide your best personal definition and explanation of the American Dream based on what you've read here or elsewhere, then apply this concept to yourself and your life β€” now and in the future as you envision it. What leads you to your definition and your feelings about the American Dream and its relevance to your life? Does this perspective encourage or discourage you? How relevant is this concept to you, ultimately? Aim for clear, precise, vivid language. Make claims and illustrate them. Draw conclusions. Then edit and proofread before submitting your best work of at least 500 words. If you quote or paraphrase from the above sources and/or others, be sure to cite by author and page number or source title. Provide a proper MLA Works Cited list for all sources you use, whether you take specific ideas or specific words from them. Review in-text MLA citation rules and/or MLA Works Cited list rules as needed.

However, having read different sources and looked back on my own life, I now see the American Dream as a promise of achievement and more as a desire to expand on personal development, self-determined aspirations, and have the freedom to live a full life. In my case, the American Dream is not about money or celebrity status, but it is the possibility to control my own future and lead a dignified life and present more opportunities to those who will come after me. In the past, the American Dream was based on the notions of democracy, freedom, and equality. Adams popularized it in 1931 as a vision of "a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone," where people are known not by their situations of birth but by who they are (364). This was an ideal that inspired generations, residing even in the case of immigrants who considered America a land of opportunity. As time passed, though the dream changed- it ceased to be a communal stance of equality, now it became focused more on the individualistic needs of material wealth. Although this transformation is an aspect of shifting social and economic conditions, it has also made the dream less reachable to most people. Pew Research found that only 53% of Americans believe that the dream remains within reach, 41% think it was attainable but is...
