Language as Power
In "Native Son," Richard Wright tries to challenge the dominant stereotype in African-American authors. Also, the novel describes how the stereotypes are propelled and the interests they serve. The language adapted in Native son is literary naturalism, where the environment of the character, as opposed to their will, plays a critical determinant of their life. Ebonics is a term used to depict the common language used by the Africa-American variety of English standards. Ebonics is a word coined from ebony and phonics, which, when combined, give the "Black sound." (Wright 6). Ebonics roots are traced even before the American Civil war. This language was used as a slave's language.
