Critique each of the following potential thesis statements. What about them is well done, and what is not? Rewrite the statements to make them better thesis statements.
"In this essay I will try to prove that drugs such as Prozac and Paxil are unnecessary and probably dangerous."
"In his novel The Long Walk, it seems as if Stephen King is attempting to make a statement about the evils of laissez-faire capitalism, and in my opinion the characters and settings reflected this well."
"The Great Gatsby is inarguably the best-written novel of the last 100 years, leaving millions of readers with either a renewed or disenchanted view of the “American Dream."
"The cost of a college education is rising sharply."
"The two films are different. One focuses on two women who are close friends and the other focuses on two male friends who are really just buddies."
"In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Robert Louis Stevenson symbolizes English upper and lower-class society."

"In this essay, I will try to prove that drugs such as Prozac and Paxil are unnecessary and probably dangerous."
The thesis statement lacks a sense of certainty. It alleviates the seriousness attached to a researcher/writer devoted and pledges diligence in ensuring that the given statement is either verified or nullified. Moreover, the statement has examples, which should not be the case in developing a thesis statement.
"In his novel The Long Walk, it seems as if Stephen King is attempting to make a statement about the evils of laissez-faire capitalism, and in my opinion, the characters and setting reflected this well."
The statement is averagely good, considering that it has the two main clauses required in a thesis. The first part is the observation, and the second part is the provision of reason. However, the statement lacks a call to action due to the absence of a "so what clause."
