Whose labor produced and moved what products was supposedly open, but in fact, job opportunities were constricted by location, ethnicity, education, and other factors. In this discussion we will focus on Labor and Ethnic Identity. Reading Working, we see enormous gaps between the best-paying jobs held by a few and the low-paying jobs held by most. Statistics also reveal patterns about how people tend to labor according to their ethnicity and race. Sometimes this separates people, and sometimes it brings them together. We also see how payroll combined with ethnicity leads to (lack of) opportunities to accomplish the American Dream (own a house). Answer these questions, using the bold text as your subject line. 1. Discuss the role of race and ethnicity in labor. How and why did ethnicity and race come to be associated with specific types of jobs? Explain historical examples. Historically, in the US, people had access to specific job types based on their racial or ethnic backgrounds. Bearing the burden of systemic discrimination, for instance, racial minorities were considered largely for the lower paying and manual labor jobs. According to Native Strangers, the role of race and ethnicity in labor was evident as early as the 20th century when immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe were considered for industrial labor while African Americans were limited to domestic work or sharecropping.
