Chapter Review Question
The first technique to being a good listener is facing the speaker and maintaining eye contact. This technique communicates to the other person that they have your full attention and that you are eager to hear their message. The second technique is listening to non-vernal cues including facial expression and body language. Paying attention to the other person’s non-verbal cues improves one’s ability to decode the message being communicated. The third technique is not interrupting when the other person is speaking. Interruptions can sidetrack the conversation and therefore waiting for one’s turn ensures that the discussion remains on track. The fourth technique is listening without judging. Maintaining a non-judgmental attitude is crucial to truly understanding the other person’s point of view or message (Whitmore). The fifth technique is showing that you are listening. It is important to provide positive feedback to the other person like nodding the head, smiling, or making affirmative replies to encourage the speaker to continue.
