Technology has rapidly altered how people communicate with each other. The introduction of new digital technologies has seen an increase in modalities and channels of interaction. More than ever, face-to-face communication is increasingly been replaced by modalities such as instant messaging and the internet. While this is the case, some critics believe that digital communication is hurting the traditional way of communicating and bonding in society.
Both digital and face-to-face communication have their benefits and shortcomings. Today, digital communication has increased flexibility in communication and reduced associated costs. Digital communication eliminates the cost of traveling to a meeting point as would be required in the case of face-to-face communication. In addition, digital allows an unlimited number of people to participate in one particular session as compared with face-to-face communication where the number of participants is limited by the size of the meeting point or venue (Rotondi, Stanca, and Tomasuolo 17).
