3 Intercultural theatre comes with the befit of diversity in terms of performance styles, music, and visual aesthetics. Its audience enjoys accessing diverse presentation and aesthetic approaches.
Some challenges accompany intercultural theatre.
1 Intercultural theatre can lead to cultural identity crises. The mix-up and integration of cultures as expressed in theatre arts can often cause disintegration and diminution of the specific group identifying features. The cultural boundaries are likely to be broken, thereby leading to the loss of their homogeneity. Some groups may lose a substantial body of their cultural identity by adopting other groups ‘cultural practices, attitudes, and norms.
2 Intercultural theatre raises the critical problem of political correctness where intercultural theatre arts are perceived as a foreign phenomenon. It is usual to observe a clash of perceptions between Euro-American and other parts of the world. Some groups view intercultural arts to colonize, exploit, and infiltrate native cultures with foreign practices that are often in bad faith.
3 Intercultural theatre is quite broad, leading to increased misunderstanding and possible conflicts.
