Dear Chair and Respected Members, Your Excellencies, it is a great privilege to say a few words on behalf of Kenya regarding the expansion of permanent memberships in the United Nations Security Council. The Security Council was established in 1945 and reflects the relations of forces characteristic of that post-World War II period. But the world is significantly different now. We have gone from the two world wars, the Korean war, Cold War, Gulf war and several other conflicts that have significantly altered the overall geopolitical landscape. One thing for sure is that there has been quite a change as far as the world is, and there is a need to have a new view of the same. The powers represented within the current permanent membership of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China do not correspond to the twenty-first century's geopolitical realities, making the Council weak in legitimacy and effectiveness in the face of global problems. There is a new crop of important global players who might have a say as far as global security goes. It is worth noting that the economic picture that was there 70 years ago is not the same that is there today.
