Pairs Report on UN SDGs and PLCs
Introduction
Next PLC and JD Sports PLC are competitors in the UK retail industry, particularly in the clothes and footwear industries. Next PLC is a frontrunner in the UK fashion and homeware retail industry, catering to many customers through brick-and-mortar and online stores. Next PLC serves diverse customers through its brick-and-mortar locations and rapidly expanding online marketplace. The customer base of Next consists of online retailers, reaching 8.1 million in 2023 alone (Next 2023, p. 36). Marks and Spencer, Debenhams, and Zara are among the key competitors, with the primary challenge being the rapidly developing online market for fashion apparel (Next, 2023, p. 158). JD Sports PLC retails designer-branded sportswear, catering to fashionable customers who prioritise a sporty lifestyle. Direct Sports, Foot Locker, Puma, Under Armour, and Adidas are some of its main rivals. JD caters mainly to a younger demographic that values activewear and other goods that reflect a more athletic, outdoor, and athletic way of life (JD Sports, 2024, p. 65). Changes in consumer buying power, the rise of internet shopping, and the latest fashions impact both sectors. Companies were compelled to quickly adjust their online platforms and delivery services due to the acceleration of the latter caused by the COVID-19 epidemic. Next, JD Sports Plc took the initiative to address these tendencies. Working in pairs or groups allowed us to share our knowledge, perspectives, and ideas (Hammar Chiriac, 2014, p. 3). When we collaborate, it motivates learning, which naturally translates into improved outcomes in the Pair report
Financial, Market, and Strategic Performance
It is helpful to have more people, which makes tasks easier through shared work (Eberly, 2024). Despite changes in customer behaviour, Next Plc and JD Sports Plc, two prominent British high-street shops, have different strategic methods to influence the retail market. We analyse these two giants’ financial, market, and strategic performance using their most recent annual reports. Even though they operate in the same sector, long-standing UK retailers Next Plc and JD Sports Plc had very different financial results in 2023. While Next Plc made £870.4 million in profit before taxes in 2024, JD Sports made £991.4 million in 2023 (JD Sports, 2024, p. 14).
Next, Plc’s outstanding financial performance is influenced by its strong online presence, which it continues to harness through its digital strategy. Online sales increased while in-store sales decreased after the pandemic (Next Plc, 2024, p. 35). The noticeable shift from in-store to internet shopping has made their progress unabated. A 20% increase in operational profit margins due to efficiency gains indicates strong financial health and competent management. JD Sports had a two-pronged approach, growing their brick-and-mortar stores and online marketplace (JD Sports, 2024, p. 42). Total revenue increased by 18.2% in 2023, as stated in their report (JD Sports, 2024, p. 45). Expenditures on improving store formats and the customer experience kept the profit margin lower than Next Plc. Despite this extra cost, JD Sports has been prudent with their money, as shown by their steady profit margin. JD Sports achieved a 1.8% rise in comparable revenues for the last quarter of 2023.

Both organisations have shown signs of financial success, but their paths have differed. Next Plc could maintain a solid profit margin despite declining sales at its physical stores because it took advantage of the trend towards online shopping. The combination of in-store development and a robust e-commerce infrastructure allowed JD Sports to grow revenue despite increased operational expenditures. Even though the retail industry is changing rapidly, Next Plc and JD Sports have benefited financially from their e-commerce strategies and hybrid approaches. Both shops’ financial success demonstrates their ability to adapt their strategies, which encourages their future endeavours.

Market Performance
In its 2020 fiscal year, Next Plc recorded revenues of £4,361m, down 1.5% from the previous year. The downturn was primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s detrimental impact on retail. Interestingly, though, Following a 1.5% decline from the previous year, Next had revenues of £4,361m in its 2020 fiscal year. The COVID-19 pandemic had a devastating effect on the retail sector, which is where the recession began. However, in 2020, Next’s internet sales increased by 21%.
On the other hand, JD Sports’ sales skyrocketed in 2020, increasing 30% from 2019 to £6,110 million (Butler, 2021). They recently acquired the US sportswear retail brand Finish Line, which contributed to the jump, along with record foreign revenues and significant growth in e-commerce. Thanks to its strong brand presence in apparel, footwear, and home goods, Next maintained stable performance among UK fashion retail competitors. Next, Plc faces persistent threats to its market position from increasing competition and the proliferation of comprehensive online shopping. On the flip side, JD Sports expertly increased its market share in the worldwide sportswear industry by constantly expanding its business through smart acquisitions in a highly competitive field.
Next, it experienced a 21% increase in internet sales in 2020. In contrast, JD Sports experienced a significant surge in their revenues, hitting £6,110m in 2020, which represents a gain of 30% compared to 2019 (Butler, 2021). The spike was attributed to their recent acquisition of Finish Line, a prominent US sportswear retail brand, record-breaking overseas sales, and significant e-commerce expansion. Next’s performance remained steady compared to other fashion retailers in the UK, primarily due to its strong brand presence in clothes, footwear, and home products. Nevertheless, Next’s market position is continuously challenged by increasing competition and the growing prevalence of internet retail. JD Sports effectively increased its market share by consistently expanding its presence in the global sportswear market. They achieved this by strategically acquiring other companies in a highly competitive field.
