Objective

The objective of this coursework is to give students an opportunity to use theories and concepts to analyse organisational phenomenon.



Requirements:



Students should choose a topic out of a choice of nine topics delivered in this module, including: 1) Control, power and resistance; 2) Organisational structure; 3) Motivation theory; 4) Culture, multi-culturalism and organisations; 5) Leadership; 6) Diversity; 7) Business ethics; 8) Learning organisations; 9) Alternative organisations. Students need to find a movie (or a novel, or an empirical case) and connect it to the knowledge of OB in this module. Introduce these theories with reference to the selected case/movie/novel (you may choose one or a few scenarios from the movie/novel/case) and explain clearly and concisely how the OB theories may help to explain the story (or the scenario you want to discuss/analyse). It is suggested that you focus on one theory and offer in-depth analysis/discussion. Students can also use an OB “metaphor” to analyze the case/movie/novel. Papers which present personal opinion unsupported by course concepts will score few points. The good essays will demonstrate knowledge (and further reading) and will go beyond the material presented in the lectures. Ensure that your essay is structured logically and has an introduction, body, and conclusion. The word count must be provided on the cover page.



Students should refer to the Undergraduate Handbook for more general guidance regarding expectations of written work, including the Harvard referencing style, which is required for this assignment. See Appendix I.



Assessment criteria: Paper will be marked based on the following criteria –



1. Clarity (15%):

The structure if the paper should be clear and logical; the selected case and the selected theory should be clearly identified.

2. Content: Critical thinking, scope and depth (70%):

Analysis should be informed by theoretical knowledge (i.e. it should be relevant) and should be critical (i.e., students should demonstrate critical thinking). Recommendations should be clear and relevant.

3. Writing style and originality (15%)

The writing style and the paper layout should meet the requirements specified in the coursework guide (available on Moodle). References should be reliable and credible. References should be presented using the Harvard style. The coursework should not be reproduced, in part or in full, from previous work (published or not).



The length of the essay: 2,000 words; i.e. 1,800 – 2,200 words are allowed, excluding the references. Essays which exceed the word limit will be treated as having a major error (as defined in the Business School’s Undergraduate Marking Guide), and will be limited to a maximum mark of 59. There will also be deduction of marks for essays that fall short of the suggested word count more than 10% (i.e. 1,800 words).

Motivations pose significant challenges to managers. On the other hand, although implementing motivation theories may aid in solving the problem, managers should be cautious to choose the desired perspectives. Most of the theories are rooted in western culture and the implementations from developed countries like the United States. For example, implementation of excellent theories by Todd in the Outsourced film resulted in establishment of the company in India. If he had decided to use the theories of American thinking, the idea of training the Indians could not be a success. However, adopting the theories used in the country aided in the establishment of the company. The implementation of the desired motivation perspectives by American Novelty Products Company in the Outsourced film lead to the achievement of the organization’s mission.
The Outsourced film begins with the American Novelty Products sending one of their workers to train low-paid employees in India on an innovated call center by his company. The American employee in India is revealed as Todd (Josh Hamilton) and he faces surprising encounters with the inhabitants of India (Ebert, 2019). His assistant asks a lot of questions that are not even related to the context of their business. How can achieved professional business leader lack adequate information on his field of operation? Enquiring on the knowledge about the incoming products proves lack of efficacy at work. Having him as assistant means that he’s trained for the work and he should have adequate knowledge on all business operations. However, Todd shows patience and does not over react to all the issues surrounding the new geographical working location. In this case, if he decides to remain focused on the American sequence, he will not achieve the major focus of establishing the company in India. He has to choose between coping to see the ultimate success of the business activity and undermining the new culture to fail the aim of the business in creating establishment in the country. Todd becomes a business stranger in the strange land of India, but he has to work to achieve the assigned task.
In the study of human behavior within an organizational environment, motivation to work is a key characteristic towards the achievement of business goals. Although the organizational environment may impact the level of investment put by workers towards the mission, various motivation strategies encourage workers to work harder and enhance achievement of goals (Catherine, 2018). In motivation theory looks at the level of interest and the action of the members towards attaining the organization’s mission. The individual behavior of Todd is bound to determine the establishment of the new call center in India. Although the natives might be interested in the product, the individual has to exhibit self-motivation in handling their issues, considering the existence of strange cultures. The Modern organizational behavior studies the different approaches used by various organizations to approach motivation, depending of the size of the business, number of employees, target market and the region of operation (M. Badubi, 2017). Taylor’s theory on motivation shows his believe that people are only motivated to work hard by money. In this case, the level of efforts should be directly proportional to earning. According to Taylor, an organization deviating from the structure may fail. If workers do a lot of work without sufficient pay, they may withdraw from the work or give poor attention in the field of operation. The level of employees’ motivation in an organization determines the urgency in achievement of goals and missions in a business.
Todd’s encounter and interaction with the Indian inhabitants proves that individual motivation originates from the surrounding environment. A person gets motivated to work hard towards the achievement of the organization goals and also individual gains by inner intrusions and the lives of the people surrounding the organizations. For Example, the Outsourced film revealed that the assistant has delayed his marriage due to poor earnings (Ebert, 2019). Having to leave in developing country requires efforts to enhance achievement and deviation from the action results to crisis. According to him, his salary cannot sustain a home and getting married may yield tremendous problems. In this case, this issue can enhance the individual motivation of Todd because he would not like to face such circumstances. The exposure in interacting with various people yields motivation because the individuals portray varying issues related with scarcity. The diversity of interacting with various people from different regions determines the level of individual motivation (M. Badubi, 2017). Todd has lived in America, a well-established country with tremendous developments and the account of failures is not prevalent in the country. Seeing people failing and postponing significant plans motivates him to work towards the establishment of the company not only to earn but also to help the individuals.
The instant of acceptance to venture into the country encourages Todd to stay and see the ultimate achievement of the American Novelty to trading in India. Considering the purpose of training low income earners to improve their lives, the comfortable sight of appreciation would definitely make the work easy for Todd. The friendly and humorous Indians are bound to motivate him to further interact with them enhancing acquiring of more knowledge on the new product (Ebert, 2019). The Indians seem overwhelmed by his presence and they like interacting and listening to him. Also, the children in the country respect him just like any other adult in the community. For example, a young boy offers Todd his space and sits on his lap.
