Exegetical Issues
Pericope Analysis
All four Gospel writers numbered this exclusive miracle account among the things included since they considered its theological value (Matthew 14:13-21, Mark 6:30-44, Luke 9:10-17, and John 6:1-15). Jesus' changing the narrative setting by crossing over the Sea of Galilee is what the story will begin with and before divine intervention. This (future) Passover is a connecting point in which Jesus' miracle merges with God's miracle given to Israel in the wilderness (Exodus 16). Finally, Jesus leaves the crowd because his intent is not what the people considered his purpose. This teaching sequence follows immediately upon Jesus' water walk (John 6:16-21) and deepens the meaning of the main point about the authority of the divine.[Lunn, Nicholas P.Β The Gospels Through Old Testament Eyes: Exploring Extended Allusions. Inter-Varsity Press, 2023.]
