During the 1980s, the America culture was marked by gratified political and social conservatism. This period was denoted and identified by the systems and policies of President Ronald Reagan. Conservatives prefer conserving traditional values and customers while liberals believe in reforms such as the distribution of wealth. The reign of President Reagan believed that the elimination regulation would help in the development of businesses in America. This paper explains changes in women rights, the wealth gap and civil rights as some of the social issues experienced in the 1980s.
In the 1980s, there were heated cultural battles concerning sexual policies and gender. The women in the United States started pushing into the spheres which were predominantly preserved for men. The number of women who were in the workforce had outnumbered those who were staying at home by 1984. Geraldine Ferraro became the first woman to run on a major party’s presidential ticket after he was nominated by Walter Mondale, a Democratic candidate by 1984. The issue of abortion also arose during led by Sandra Day O’Connor, an advocate of abortion rights. This anti-abortion forces led to the 1976 Hyde Amendment which illegalized the use of government money to pay for abortions.[The American Yawp, 2013, "29.
