Topics — Paper #1 Age of DemocracyDirections- You are to write a paper of 4-^ pages in length on one of the following topics. Please write your paper in 12 point, Times New Roman font, using double spacing and standard margins. These papers are due before or at class time on March 4.1 would like you to hand them in in-person, in class. Please do not email them to me. I will deduct 1/3 of a letter grade for each day that papers are handed in late. You may write on a topic of your choosing if you wish, but PLEASE discuss your idea with me first. That can be taken up by email.
Feel free to ask me any questions that occur to you before or while writing these papers. You may email me, or, of course, come visit during my office hours. I also encourage you to take a rough draft of your paper to the Writing Center (Bunting 409). This is a free resource, and it can only help. If you are not a native English speaker, you are required to do this.
Grading Criteria-1 am looking for 4 things in these papers:
1. Persuasive argumentation In these papers, you are asked to take a position on the interpretation of texts and prove that you are reading carefully. You must support the position you take, for example, in the form of allusions to the text in question and, of course, ample quotations from the text. Don’t go overboard with the quotes: I am grading you, not Machiavelli or Burke. A good suggestion is to use brief quotes, interspersed with your own comments.
2. Clarity. Make sure that your position in the paper, and all arguments and evidence used to support it, is expressed clearly. A proofreader can help determine this.
3. Correct grammar. This follows from the first criterion: correct grammar is essential for clear writing. If you are shaky on grammar, I highly suggest you have someone in the Writing Center (Bunting 4th floor) proofread it.
4. Insightful comments and critique. This is what separates the good papers—and great ones—from the adequate ones: Make your paper interesting, and include insight beyond what was discussed in class. £*^4
Footnoting-
I expect you to quote from the texts you write about, but please quote sparingly. When you quote, please footnote. If you do not know how to create a footnote within the text of the paper, ask Microsoft help, or consult me.
Here is the footnoting style I would like you to use: Author name, Book Title, Translator name (City of Publication: Publisher, year published), page # of quoted passage.
Example: Niccolo Machiavelli, The Discourses, Trans. Leslie Walker SJ (New York: Penguin Classics, 2003), pg. 123.
You only need to give all this information with the first footnote. For subsequent footnotes from the same text, give the author's name and the page #.
Example: Machiavelli, The Discourses, pg.# 147.

CORRUPT PEOPLE AND GOOD STATE IN “DISCOURSES” BY MACHIAVELLI
In section 18, Machiavelli says that laws cannot be counted on to reform corrupted people. Corrupt people are bad and spoilt citizens who live for their profit. They do not respect the law, and sometimes they adopt laws that enable them to become more corrupt. In a corrupt society, the rich become richer, and the poor become poorer. The rich seizes powers, and they do not allow people who will work for the benefit of the entire community come to power. In corrupt societies, power has the strongest and the richest, while the noble have abstained from being candidates because of fear. Therefore the community becomes worse because there is no opportunity or the possibility of the noble getting a chance.[Machiavelli, Niccolo. "Discourses on the first ten books of Titus Livius." Machiavelli talks about the transformation of the corrupt using laws as something that can be achieved and cannot be achieved. It is strange for a leader who came into power using a bad means to have good aims in the future. If such an individual can use such means to obtain power in the state, it also means such a person is also capable of using such means against the people of the state. From a moral point of view, the question is complex. Even if such leaders do good things when they come to power, they will not be able to govern for a long time for two reasons. First corrupt people will view the leader as corrupt, they will not support some of the reforms proposed towards the good virtue of the society, and they will overthrow the leader. Secondly, citizens will not believe that such a leader because they know it is impossible for a person to come to power through bad means and reform society. It is impossible for a corrupt person to come to power and serve good goals for the whole society. This is because it is versus the nature of that leader to do good things. Although such leaders will always try to obtain positive results, they will not make it because their understanding of good does not coincide with the universal on, so all the things they will do, will not be good.[Machiavelli, Niccolo. Machiavelli states that if laws are to be maintained in order to stop corrupt people, then there is a need to have good customs. Also, institutions and laws that were made during the early days of a republic when men were good to tend to lose their purpose when these men become bad. In case laws of the state are changed, and there are no changes in these institutions, the result is that these new laws will remain ineffective because the institutions are corrupted. A perfect example of this case is the Roman government. In Rome, there was a constitution that was used to regulate the government, and there were laws that enable judges to keep citizens in order. The constitution regulating the government consisted of the authority that was vested in the people, the tribunes, and the legal procedures the consuls and the Senate. These institutions did not undergo any changes in the course of events, yet there were changes in the laws that kept people order. For example sumptuary law, adulter...
