Difference between Digital Signature and Digital Certificate
In cryptography and digital forensic sectors, the terms digital signature and digital certificate can appear to mean the same thing. Maybe this is because they usually accompany each other within the cryptographic systems and protocols. However, this is not the case since the two words have a different meaning. A digital signature is a mathematical technique established for determining authenticity and credibility of digital documents such as the digital messages or software. This mathematical technique, therefore, helps in ascertaining that the sent file, message or software does not tamper with before reaching its recipient (Johnson, Menezes & Vanstone, 2001). On the other hand, digital certificate, which can also be referred to as the public key certificate is defined as an electronic document that helps in binding together the public key and the identity of the sender through the aid of digital signature (Tycksen & Jennings, 2001). The primary purpose of the digital certificate is that it helps recipients of the digital message to determine the identity of the sender. Digital certificate helps in binding together the message and the name of the person or organization that it came from.
